Prenatal Care

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care is the time from conception to birth, when your doctor tracks your baby’s development and your overall health. Numerous studies have linked prenatal care to better health for the child and mother. And prenatal visits help you develop a relationship with the doctor who will help welcome your child into the world.

Prenatal office visits usually occur:

  • Once a month, from conception to approximately 27 weeks gestation
  • Every two weeks, from approximately 27 weeks to 36 weeks
  • Every week, from 36 weeks until delivery

Your visit will usually include:

  • Weight, blood pressure and urine checks
  • Measurement of the uterus
  • Physical exam to check for any issues like unusual swelling
  • Fetal heart rate check
  • Other tests as needed, like sonograms or screenings for possible birth defects
  • Counseling on the best health practices for you and your child

More frequent visits may be required if you have a pre-existing condition like diabetes. Sometimes, if complications arise, additional appointments with a high-risk specialist (Perinatologist) may be needed. If that is the case, rest assured that Dr. Brown and the high-risk specialist will work together for your and your baby’s best outcome.
